The Poisonous Blowfish, Part 1: The Lips That Tingled With Death · 22 February 07

The Japanese biologist sipped his sparkling wine and leaned forward over the table. He spoke of blowfish.

'There are many kinds of poisonous blowfish, and you must correctly identify the kind of fish so that you can know which part of it is dangerous,' he said. 'But you can learn to do this, and you can prepare it quite safely at home.'

He took another sip, and leaned back

`The real danger in eating a poisonous blowfish, you see, is when you order it in a fine restaurant.'

This seemed, to me, counter-intuitive.

'You see,' he said. 'In a very fine restaurant, they often wish to impress you. They want to give you a sensation that they feel is fundamental to the blowfish. So they leave a bit of this poison in with the blowfish.'

But why would they do such a thing?

'The bit of poison brings a bit of numbness to the lips. Great restaurants sometimes pride themselves on giving you this sensation.'

And they make mistakes?

'The problem is that every human body is different. What might numb one person's lips will kill another man.'

He sipped again.

'Every human body is different,' he repeated. `And sometimes people forget this.'

COMING SOON: More blowfish.

  1. I hope you didn’t tell that dude where you live. At the end of this movie, you definitely find out that his fascination with blowfish has long since morphed him into an evil Mr. Glass type character who believes that God has put him on this earth to separate the wheat from the chaff.

  2. Can the poison be applied to other parts of the body for the same numbing satisfaction?
