A Japanese High Schooler Reviews 'The Brothers Grimm' · 2 March 07

Regular readers all know that I'm in constant awe of my students' writing.

A female student of mine recently wrote an impromptu review of the 2005 movie 'The Brother's Grimm'. I reproduce it here, in it's entirety (with slight spelling/grammatical corrections):

The Brother's Grimm isn't so good.

[The] picture is very beautiful and [there's] a romantic atmosphere. But [the] main actor isn't so handsome... and baldness.

[He] has a large forehead.

I can't get excited at this movie.

That's the kind of direct, honest, writing I want to see, in class or out. Main stream movie reviewers take note.

MEANWHILE, BACK IN AMERICA: Heath Leger is probably crying a little.

  1. I couldn’t agree more with her appraisal, and would recommend her review to others. Recommendation scores 5 of 5 stars.

    Bravo, Saleem’s student, bravo!

  3. Damn you double ‘s’!

  4. MEL: If you mean the The Double S Ranch family-owned working Cutting Horse and Guest Ranch, nestled on over 950 secluded acres in East Texas, adjacent to Lake Cypress Springs just outside of Mt. Vernon, Texas, then I find your statement of damnation confusion and wholly unwarranted.

If, however, you mean the common spelling obstacle, then please ignore the above sentence.

  5. SALEEM: I was referring to this Double S Ranch (nestled in the hills of East Texas between Tyler and Lufkin on 37 acres of lush pasture with ponds, abundant trees, and sheds for everyone!). I was so excited by the prospect of quarter horse foals that I misplaced my glasses in a frenzy of cooing (Who has an elongated face? Who’s faster than a Thoroughbred for a quarter of a mile? Who can whip around barrels and chase cattle? You do/are/can, etc.). My love made me blind to everything: grammatical errors; changing websites; even to that which sits an arm length away from my very face! Woe to the nearsighted upon Earth, woe.

Once, again, damn you double s!
