The Melancholy Whale Who Came to Dinner · 9 April 07

Hey there, Mr. Whale!

The Unfortunate Whale Who Came to Dinner

Wow, where'd you get that giant fork and knife? I didn't even know you could hold stuff.

And why you looking so down? Oh, wait! You're being served? As a free sample?

Um, okay.

This is What Canned Whale Looks Like

Wow, you taste terrible. But maybe it's because you come from a can. Could you do me a favor and meet me at a party in a few weeks? And maybe be served sashimi-style on a fancy plate in an expensive restaurant?

And be ordered for me by someone else, without me knowing, just so I don't feel the guilt of, you know, choosing and paying to eat your raw flesh?

I mean, you don't have to do it right now, just within the next few weeks, so I can see if there's any difference in flavor.

This is What Whale Meat Looks Like

Perfect. Gosh, Mr. Whale, you sure are effective.... at tasting not-especially-good!

Ha! Snap! Oh, no he didn't!

Oh, yes. I did.

  1. Perhaps the effect would be better by snorting it…?

  2. That’s extraordinary. I did not realize whales had opposable thumbs.

P.S. – I’ve seen that stuff in the tin foil at the beach before – usually it’s found near a sea gull – I don’t think it’s edible.

  3. Well at least it’s low in cholestorol and calories, yet high in protein!

Plus, it IS the treasure of Japan, so…

  4. Contrary to what you’ve held true all these years, mammals weren’t made for consumption; especially whales.

  5. BYZEK: If you’re ever able to honestly start a story with ‘This one time, after my kid and I had just snorted a bit too much whale’, um, I’ll give you a can of whale meat.

MICHAEL: I think it was banned from high school textbooks or something.

EAT A BUG: Actually, insanely good customer service at 7-11 is the treasure of Japan.

MEL: I’m willing to concede that mammals weren’t made for consumption.

But that alone doesn’t mean they shouldn’t be consumed.
i.e. Bananas weren’t made to be used as pretend telephones by Fozzy the Bear, but his using them as such is endearing, not immoral, right?

You’re gonna have to give me something more, preferably involving a bizarre pun or, uh, obscure-but-not-indecipherable hip hop lyric reference.

You can do it. I believe in you.

  6. You should be a very rich man. Find a publisher.

  7. Because wit isn’t my forte—puns make me rue my existence—and all of rap is an obscure medium for me, please accept this sketch in lieu of anything amusing I could have said, or would have said, had I been up to snuff.

One day, koalas across the great stretch of Australia will stand up as mammals and demand better treatment for all the brethren, be they fellow pouch creatures, tree huggers, prey, predators, or sea creatures. If their demands aren’t met, they’ll start packing some heat.

  8. MEL: That works. I knew you could do it.
