A Place to Which One May Not Welcome · 11 July 07

The students were writing letters. Welcome letters, to their new English teacher who will arrive next month.

On the board I wrote:

‘Welcome to Japan .

‘But you could use any word you want instead of Japan,’ I said. ‘Any place. For example, Welcome to Kumamoto, or Kyushu,’ I said, naming their city and the name of our island.

A boy in the back called out, ‘Welcome to K——— High School’.

‘Yes! Great!’ I said. ‘That would be a good start to your letter.’

A tall boy in back raises his hand. He had a sample sentence to try. He had a loud, clear, voice.

‘Welcome to … my body?’ he asked.

Oh, wait. Sorry. No. Perhaps one should not write any words he wants.

I stood corrected.

  1. Does this means your leaving Japan? Contract finished? Will you stay on and look for another job? Take it from me … the States will never seem the same now that you’ve lived in Japan. I can’t wait to move back to Japan! My Japanese husband says two more years. What will I do without your blog to keep me connected and sane while I wait?

  6. Was it that creepy guy from PBS in the 70s that would wear the inside-out spandex body suit and talk about anatomy? I think your students deserve to watch that show as one of your parting gifts.
